About Winter School 2020:

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee organized Winter school 2020, a three-day event scheduled from January 17, 2020, to January 19, 2020. It offered an unmatchable learning experience with some renowned Professors and experts to the participants in the remarkable fields of Social Entrepreneurship, Accessible India, Issues of Indian Economy, Personal & Interpersonal development. It consisted of Guest Lectures, Workshops, Panel discussion, Group Discussion, a field visit and many more. The event witnessed the participation of 35 students from different colleges all over the country.

Learn, Implement, Change.

Here is the overview of some of the events organised in WS 2020:
• MUN (Model United Model): MUN is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. Students convene at Model UN conferences, to debate their assigned agendas/topics with other UN member states and nations’ delegates. In MUN, students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN in Winter School IIT Roorkee involved and taught participants, speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to teamwork and leadership abilities. As an extracurricular activity, it was meant to engage students and allow them to develop a deeper understanding of current world issues. The agenda of MUN in WS2020 was ‘Refugees Security’.
• Session on “Making Things Happen in India” by Mr Anil Swarup: Mr Anil Swarup is an Indian author and retired Indian Administrative Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, 1981 batch. He has served in various key positions like Education Secretary of India, Coal Secretary of India, Additional Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat of India. On Day 2 of Winter School 2020, he took a session on “Making Things Happen in the Government”. In the session, Mr Anil Sir explained the true aspects and scenario of decision making in India.
• Networking session by Prof. Emeritus Vinay Kumar Nangia: Prof. Vinay K. Nangia is a UPSC interview panellist and former head, DOMS, IIT Roorkee. He has also achieved Lifetime Achievement Award in Business Education. This networking session was aimed to improve personality and change the mindsets of the participants about interacting with people. The session was concluded with a message of “Identifying the company of good people in life.”
• Talk on “Growing Roots of India” by Mr Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya: First-generation technology entrepreneur, Mr Vijay is the Co-founder, Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ekgaon technologies Pvt. Ltd. In the session, Vijay sir shared his views on “Growing Roots of India” and rode the audience through his difficult and exciting journey of using IT to provide services to rural areas through ‘Ekgaon’ and that it is the first company to provide mobile phone enabled financial services delivery platform in South Asia.
• Workshop – “Throne of dilemma”: In this workshop, many real-life dilemmas were presented to the participants in the form of questions. Why our action in the same situation keeps changing from time to time? Why different people react differently to the same situation? What influences one’s decision-making process? Such questions were addressed in the workshop. The motive of the workshop was to make the participants able to identify and understand the different social and ethical aspects of situation in life.
•Session on “Social Entrepreneurship” by Mr Abhishek Saini: Mr Abhishek Saini is a Co-Founder of ‘Those in Need,’ and also a Bharat Leadership Awardee 2018 and Young Leader’s Awardee 2017. He is a creative young economist, with the motivation to change society. He took this session on “Social Entrepreneurship” explaining about it and ‘Theory of change’ to the audience.
• Workshop – “Networking”: This workshop was aimed at initiating conversations and breaking the ice among the participants. It helped them in developing and improving their communication skills. It proved to be a perfect chance for each one of the participants to meet new people and make friends. The session perfectly explained the significance of networking to the participants of Winter School 2020.
